We used a uniform, "style-tribe" concept for the executive's costumes. Men's pant legs, ties, and lapels were narrowed. The palette for the head executives was steel grey and black tones and used a broader palette of browns and greens for the men's chorus.

HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING

Costume Design

Mens' Concept

The "executive dress code" underscored the overstatement of corporate stereotypes and added to the absurd humor of the play.

Womens' Concept

We costumed women in solids with a few patterned fabrics.  Purses added a geometric component. We color-blocked female leads (Rosemary in blues and Smitty in pinks).  An existing stock of 26 matching gowns was embellished with slight variations for the Paris Original number, saving time and money.

Setting the production in early spring allowed us to use

bright colors. Sweaters, in preference to blouses, readily

regained their shapes after dance numbers, ensuring a crisp look throughout.  Rear pleats in pencil skirts were opened to accommodate vigorous choreography.
