The Pirate Captain Toledano - Period Short
When the Inquisition expels Jews from Spain, Captain Toledano plots revenge; but a mysterious stowaway threatens to expose the captain's true motives to the crew - a film about identity rites and the price of secrecy.
The Stowaway
...an everyman, lost, determined to reclaim his identity...
The Stowaway is a fugitive who spends two weeks hiding in the ship's hold. I costumed him in a loose knit, collarless sweater and linen shift, exposing his collarbones and reducing his status.
Captain Toledano
...reason, heart, head, idealist/realist
Layers of costume pieces from various cultures linked the Captain to the world of his exploits while concealing his true identity. I used a French greatcoat, Chinese cap, Persian sash, Turkish purse, English moneybag, Caribbean necklaces, and a Spanish Capitano Hat to give complexity to his costume
The Quartermaster
My notes: "intellect, statistician, brutal?, cruel?"
I selected a black and white palette for the Quartermaster, a fact seeking, calculating man, who defines himself by the rule of law.
