Realizing the Designer's Vision

The feature film Harriet is a biopic of Harriet Tubman and focuses much of its action on the events of the Underground Railroad.  I joined the crew with six weeks left of shooting and served as fitter, set fitter, and costumer.  Designer's vision boards, historical research, and a warehouse of costume stock was provided from which I selected specific garments for each actor whose costume is pictured below.

 

Designer Paul Tazewell wanted each background actor to look uniquely different, real, detailed, and complete.  Through costuming, I helped depict the full range of statuses, attitudes, personalities, and motivations of the people in Harriet's story.
