The Little Foxes
Costume Considerations
The play is set in the year 1900 in a small town in the deep south of the United States. The characters include the affluent members of the Giddens family, their household staff, and a business associate. I designed all characters, including the servants, within a narrow scope of status for realism and to underscore the highly competitive nature of greed (the play's central theme.)

Men's Character Sketches
The unity of the Giddens men's suit styles and fabrics denotes the similarity in status, with the slight exception of Mr. Marshall, whose circumstances are a bit more sophisticated.
Birdie
Act II
Act I
Birdie's costumes are variations on the idea of gentility and frivolity. Her clothes are a bit too frilly and ornate and perhaps a little too youthful.

Regina
Act I
I selected purple velvet as the fabric for Regina's first costume, introducing her as powerful and superior. The white beaded trim is positioned to hang from her breasts and move when she walks.
Zan
Act I
Act II
Act III
The arc of Zan's costumes evolves from clothing themes shared with her Aunt Birdie to themes shared with her mother, Regina.
