Costume designs for this sprawling miniseries, set on the American frontier, draw on authentically available materials. Brain tanned leather, cotton, and boiled and worsted wool were purposefully distressed to create wardrobes for a vast array of characters from many cultures.

Mountain men converted Hudson’s Bay blankets into hooded "capotes" as survival gear, this added richer colors to the otherwise neutral palette.
